For a Quiet Shift
To
those I met on and off duty who made such a difference in my life.
As I sit
in the station
for what seems the millionth time,
once again the shift ahead
keeps running through my mind.
Is this time I have to offer
ever going to be enough?
I know today I'll meet some folks
who really have it rough.
Will it be a fire,
or perhaps more EMS?
Will it be a MVA,
or some other bloody mess?
A small voice inside me
hopes for a quiet shift,
One where people get along
and give my heart a lift.
My concentration's broken
as I hear the alarm tone.
Another wish for a quiet shift
is just as quickly gone.
